Matchbox Cineclub is an independent cult film exhibitor based in Glasgow, Scotland, established in 2010. We typically screen the weird, wonderful or simply lost classics that cannot be seen elsewhere – not on DVD, streaming or general cinema release. We show weird movies, cult movies, lost and banned movies, or films that have simply slipped through the cracks and deserve another look.
Our newest venture is Weird Weekend, two days of strange and unseen cinema from around the world. Weird Weekend brings orphans, outcasts and outliers from across time and space, with a host of special guests, Q&As and events, to the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow, on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June, 2018.
CAGE-A-RAMA, Scotland’s Nicolas Cage film festival, marked Matchbox Cineclub’s first foray into festival organising, in January 2018. Matchbox Cineclub’s Keanu Reeves dedicated festival, KeanuCon, debuts in September 2018 and CAGE-A-RAMA will return in 2019.
In 2017, we presented two sold-out screenings of Chris Morris rarity Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes and also our first live score commission, Ela Orleans’ brand-new soundtrack for Guy Maddin’s Cowards Bend The Knee, which continues to tour throughout 2018. We began to distribute films with a DCP of John Paizs’ Crime Wave, which began to tour the UK in September 2017 and is available for bookings.
In July 2016, we began a monthly residency at CCA, Glasgow. From January 2015 to June 2016, we had a residency at The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow. In the past, we’ve hosted screenings at CCA, Nice N Sleazy, The Banshee Labyrinth, Sofi’s Bar and Doune The Rabbit Hole. We’ve teamed up with Glasgow Film Festival, Glasgow International Comedy Festival, Physical Impossibility, Alliance Française and Scalarama.
